Key duties and responsibilities

Under the direction of the Manager of Operations at Discovery Harbour, the Special Events Student will: 

  • Assist and support the special events coordinator in day-to-day tasks.
  • Support the research, planning, preparation and workflow of special event projects and programming.
  • Welcome visitors, conduct tours, and provide historical interpretation for Ghost Tours and Escape Room bookings. 
  • Participate in the design, development, and delivery of special events and programming.
  • Perform special events duties including set-up, execution, and take-down
  • Perform basic administration duties including data entry functions, preparing documents, and performing research.
  • Maintain and manage event databases, timelines, and files.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to all visitors.
  • Be willing to work weekends and evenings.
  • Be willing to wear historic costume and adhere to the costume policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and knowledge required

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite applications and basic audio-visual understanding
  • Possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and readily recall information
  • Comfortable working in team environment and self-motivated to work independently.
  • Possess strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work with various ages, from children to seniors and address large groups
  • Ability to perform all duties and tasks in period costume
  • Ability to take direction, problem solve, and take initiative
  • Ability to carry out interpretive responsibilities with the support of ongoing training and experience
  • Ability to adhere to workplace safety regulations, workplace protocol standards as set out by Huronia Historical Parks and/or the Ontario Public Service

Salary

The rate of pay for Special Events Student is $17.40 per hour for post secondary students.

Opportunities at Huronia Historical Parks

On-call Ticket Booth/Retail Attendants

Do you excel in customer service and cash handling? We are hiring multiple on-call workers to support admissions and retail operations at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour in 2024. These employees mainly work within the Sainte-Marie visitors’ centre in early fall, and then are invited to support key special events including Pumpkinferno at Discovery Harbour and First Light at Sainte-Marie.

On-call Manual Workers

Consider this unique opportunity with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport where you will provide assistance to the maintenance staff in general upkeep of the modern and historic buildings and grounds at the tourist attraction of Discovery Harbour.

If you love history, enjoy public speaking, and are interested in traditional craftwork, you might make a great historical interpreter. We’re seeking several on-call interpreters at both historic sites. French and German are assets. Applications from Indigenous individuals are encouraged.
