Discovery Tour

Your students will discover the life of a sailor, soldier or settler in 19th century Upper Canada. They will learn about the challenges faced by the original naval, military and civilian personnel in a fun, interactive tour. Teachers can customize tours by selecting a theme like "pioneer life", or the "War of 1812". If you would like a theme, please advise us when booking the Discovery Tour.

Time:  2 - 2 1/2 hours
Available:  May and June
Cost:  $6.00 per student
Numbers:  Minimum 20 - Maximum 75 students

The Battle for the Lakes: War of 1812

Your students will explore the reasons for the War of 1812 and how British forces and their allies rallied to defend Canada. Students participate in an exciting battle game to learn of the struggles and setbacks of the British Navy in trying to control the Great Lakes. The class will also perform shipboard and sailors' tasks to appreciate the amount of work necessary to prepare and maintain a 19th century warship.

Intermediate Curriculum Links with Grade 7

Analyse social and political values and significant aspects of life for some different groups in Canada between 1800 and 1850.
Identify factors leading to some key events and/or trends that occurred in and/or affected Canada between 1800 and 1850.


 

Through a Soldier’s Eyes: War of 1812

Have your students march in the footsteps of the soldiers who defended Canada against the United States! Your students will learn the fundamentals of marching, drill, and setting up camp complete with a soldier’s kit of “necessaries”, while exploring the causes of the conflict. This is a hands-on participatory program detailing what it was like to be a soldier during the War of 1812.

NEW FOR 2017 - Winter in Upper Canada

Full Day & Night or Two Day Program
 

Winter in Upper Canada is a new program at Discovery Harbour that offers your students a unique opportunity to experience some of what
sailors, soldiers and Métis settlers faced, who lived and worked at this remote 19th century British naval
and military base. Single classes enjoy their own curriculum-based historical visit. Teachers can work
with the experienced Program Staff to select activity workshops that provide take-home projects for every student.
 

Enjoy snowshoeing through the historic site.  Hands-on activities include rope work sessions, making a haversack, historical cooking, finger
weaving, bead work, making dream catchers and involvement in the Battle Game. Discovery Harbour’s Children’s Centre provides sleeping quarters for up to 40 (including teachers and chaperones).
 

Available: January to mid-March

Cost: 24 Hour Program - $50.00* per student
48 Hour Program - $90.00* per student
Numbers: Min.20 - Max. 40
