Welcome to Discovery Harbour! This picturesque historic site situated along beautiful Penetanguishene Bay is a reconstruction of the original 19th-century British naval and military base. The establishment was built over the period of 1817-1856 to maintain ships in readiness, supply British posts to the Northwest, and to defend Upper Canada.
Your tour begins in the Naval Establishment portion of the historic site and moves north to the Military Establishment. While no original structures remain from the original Naval Establishment, it has been reconstructed according to the historic blueprints and an attempt has been made to preserve the proper arrangement of buildings, representing the peak period of naval activity from 1817 to 1822. Please note that the large red building, which is now the King’s Wharf Theatre, sits on the location of the original Naval Storehouse which was adjacent to the King’s Wharf.
