Public Program Activities

Come visit us:  The experience of another lifetime

A sawpit demonstrationDiscovery Harbour is one of the most picturesque historic sites in Ontario, with a scenic shoreline, replica ships and smaller vessels, historic buildings, and an original Officers' Quarters along beautiful Penetanguishene Bay.  Throughout July and August, take a lively tour of the original historic areas and sense what it was like to be a sailor, officer, or artisan living and working at this remote outpost.

Furling the mainsail on the Schooner Bee Discovery Harbour offers special summer activities occurring on the historic properties.  Daily program features include 19th century cooking, sailor's ropework, quill pen writing, dockyard demonstrations and historic games. You can also explore the replica ships H.M.S. Bee and H.M.S. Tecumseth both on-deck and below.  Both vessels are stationed at the King's Wharf throughout the season.

The magnificent Officers’ Quarters is the only original building on the historic site, and has been fully restored and furnished to represent the 1840's period.

Original construction of the Officers’ Quarters began in 1831, but it was not until the summer of 1836 that the roof was completed and the building became habitable. The building was constructed from dressed limestone and was faced on the interior with brick walls that were covered with lathe and plaster. It was built to last!

The Officers’ Quarters was the largest of all the Officers’ Quarters built by the British in Upper Canada and is one of the few from the 19th-century that remains today.
